Underwater Photography

Dr.Ted DeFeo, a Kansas City native, has had growing interests in both science and the art of photography since childhood. His science focused formal education culminated in a M.D. degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Columbia. He completed both an internship and a residency program in Pathology at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City where he practiced for twenty-eight years. Following retirement from medical practice in 1999, he is devoting his time to the many facets of underwater photography.

Ironically, his introduction to underwater photography occurred at a medical meeting in the Cayman Islands in 1975. Deciding to attend one of the afternoon dives, Ted boarded the boat as a snorkler among divers. One of the divers descended with a Calypso camera, the precursor of the Nikonos camera, while Ted snorkeled above observing his attempts to master its use. Upon his return to Kansas City, Ted realized his desire to combine his love for marine life with his love for photography. He became a certified diver and spent much time researching camera equipment as well as techniques used by the few practicing underwater photographers. Most of his knowledge resulted from self study. He has also modified and built various aspects of his camera systems. Devoting much of his spare time over the last twenty-five years to searching out new waters and new sea life, Ted has ardently pursued the art of underwater photography during hundreds of dives all over the world.

His quest for quality ocean images has taken him to : Austrailia, Bahamas, Belize, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Cocos Islands (Costa Rica), Fiji, Philippines, the Red Sea from both Saudi Arabia and Israel, Roatan Island (Honduras), Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands and Vanuatu. Linda DeFeo, Ted’s wife, is also an avid diver and artist. Linda not only accompanies him but acts as an integral part of the photographic team. She is responsible for spotting many of the small and beautiful creatures that are sometimes only visible to an artist’s eye. Her professional life in interior design incorporates Ted’s photographic images printed on artist’s canvas as fine design for home and office. She is also an accomplished Sculptor with marine life a favorite subject.

The DeFeos have limited their diving to the South Pacific during the past ten years. The DeFeos reside in Overland Park, Kansas.
